Volunteering in PERU .

Challenges.

Femicide:

  • Public officials have documented at least 51 femicide cases since January 2024, a number likely to outpace the 137 recorded last year. In March 2024 alone, a woman was killed every three days.

  • From 2010 to 2023, there were over 1,600 confirmed femicides in Peru.

  • The deadliest year for women in terms of femicides in the past decade was 2023, with 258 victims

Violence:

  • Violence against women in Peru originated in a context of impunity based on a patriarchal system of inequality and social exclusion. “Machismo” (macho and patriarchal culture) and socially-dictated roles for women contribute to the problem.

  • A striking 59 percent of the population show social tolerance towards violence against women, as reported by the latest National Survey on Social Relations (Encuesta Nacional sobre Relaciones Sociales or ENARES).

Judicial System:

  • The lack of access to justice for women. The subordinate position of women in the Peruvian society, the little value that is given to their sexual integrity, the normalization of rape culture, victim-blaming and the situation of discrimination and defenselessness in which women can find themselves, are elements which leave them vulnerable to corruption and space for their rights to be compromised.
